Harrowden Turf supports plan for “The Secret Garden”.

“The Secret Garden” is being supported by Harrowden Turf. From the outset, it has been a fantastic initiative undertaken by Leicester’s Hospitals. Initially, the plan was to create a garden oasis for hospital staff, visitors and partners from the Leicester Hospitals region.

In the first phase, we joined Bowmer and Kirkland, McDermotts and a host of volunteers on the project which is designed to address a diverse range of needs.

Stuart Ridd-Jones – Managing Director

It is a great pleasure to be able to support the creation of “The Secret Garden. It’s not often that we get the chance to give something back. This is such a great project . It aims to provide a fantastic garden which reinforces the importance of gardens and outdoor space for health and general wellbeing”

Where is the garden?

The garden is located behind the Mansion House on the grounds of Glenfield Hospital. It aims to provide a new, tranquil space for patients, visitors, staff and the wider community to enjoy.

Set within the grounds of the Glenfield Hospital, the Secret Garden itself is one acre in size. Its hidden behind the walls of a Victorian walled garden which has been redesigned and restored for the benefit of all those who visit it. Moreover, key to its development is the rich history and heritage of the garden and the wider area.

Originally a private residence, Mansion House became a hospital for returning World War One servicemen. Then, in 1923, it became ‘Leicester Frith’ a home dedicated to the health and wellbeing of children and adults with learning difficulties. And now its a garden.

So, the latest phase of the Garden’s development is The DAISY Garden. It was made possible thanks to funding from the National Garden Scheme, a national nursing charity and the support of a local contractor. Recently, the garden has been adorned with ceramic daisies. These have been created by local artists Fiona Meagher and Paul Reiley. Fundamentally, the daisies commemorate the UHL nurses who have been honoured with a ‘DAISY Award’. These are international awards that recognise nurses who provide above-and-beyond care to patients and families. Ultimately, it is anticipated that all 50 DAISY Award winners will have their own ceramic daisy in the garden.
